This story perfectly illustrates what happens when societies abandon critical thinking for tribal conformity. What's particularly striking is Diesen's observation that he's been discussing these issues for twenty years - meaning generations have been systematically conditioned to reject certain perspectives outright.

The most chilling aspect isn't the government's response, but how ordinary citizens eagerly participated in tearing down posters, comparing their vandalism to "liberating the country from Hitler." When propaganda runs this deep, facts become irrelevant. People don't process information rationally anymore - they filter everything through their tribal identity.

Diesen's experience shows how modern authoritarianism works: not through jackboots and violence, but through social ostracism, reputational destruction, and the weaponization of moral righteousness. The "fact-checkers" weren't seeking truth - they were enforcing conformity to the approved narrative.

The tragedy is that this kind of indoctrination tears societies apart at their foundation. When we can no longer have rational debates about policy without questioning each other's loyalty or morality, democracy becomes impossible. The only way back is to find shared human values - our common desire for peace, security, and dignity - and work from there toward some semblance of shared truth.

But first, we have to recognize that we are being programmed to see fellow citizens as enemies. That's the real price of propaganda: it doesn't just control what we think, it destroys our capacity to think together.

Professor Diesen, I wish you strength and courage as you weather this storm. History will remember those who dared to speak truth when speaking truth becomes dangerous!

Thank you for this well formulated comment, I agree completely.

I note that Diesen mentions Covid in this tragedy. My position from day one was that it was an exercise in obedience training, and what we see here was that a lot of people became mindlessly obedient to the narrative.

Thank you for your comment. You mention "the weaponization of moral righteousness".

To claim moral righteousness is a peculiarity of Protestantism , an outgrowth of its dogma. No wonder that the UK, Germany and Scandinavia are all using this language, whereas France and Poland - both Catholic countries - are not.

Someone who had spent time living in both Norway and several asian countries, once told me that Norway was the most conformist place he had ever been - more than Japan even, which is saying a lot!

Norway and all of Scandinavia have also for a long time been among the worlds earliest and most intense users of internet and "social media" apps.

So when people in a country like that get bombaraded with one-sided propagdanda, 24-7-365 for years on end, the result is what Glenn Diesen is experiencing.

It's also an indication that they have been thoroughly brainwashed away from self-interest and can easily be "Ukrained" at any time...

i find it somewhat ironic that you rightly state we should work towards a shared truth ...yet in the same time criticize "fact checkers"

i note this new trend of the post truth society that came about with the age of Trump where indeed the feelings started to outweigh facts

https://www.cnbc.com/2016/11/16/post-truth-is-the-word-of-the-year-thanks-to-brexit-trumps-election-campaigns-says-oxford-dictionaries.html

In my opinion the world must indeed seek to go back to the good-ol-days-of objective reality being the basis for policy. However, i am at a loss on how to move in that direction?

One attempt was to "fact-check".... but now "fact checking" is more of a swear word which means that we went even deeper in the post truth cesspit.

Everything became propaganda... everything aims at the feelings... any attempt of fact finding is dismissed. How can anyone reach rational conclusions in such a world?

If anything destroys our capacity to think, it is the belief that "other sides facts are propaganda", and "my side is most certain fact" where no third party arbiter is acknowledged

I hope you watched the movie "Dont look up" which addresses this exact problem.

Propaganda and misinformation prevent rational discussion ending up with irrational (feeling based) decisions .... saying "i told you so" ends up being unfulfilling

The movie itself is an alegory of another looming disaster but that is besides the current topic. However, this underpins a root of the issue:

Parts of the population in a given society have different risk aversion to different issues.

Some people see Russia the same existential threat as some saw the comet in the movie. Some people dont. For those seeing the problem as severe, inaction of the other part is incomprehensible ...therefore they jump to the conclusion they are manipulated by propaganda...

Those not seeing the problem as existential in the first place, see the other part as panicky shrills fooled by another propaganda that are harming the life quality of the whole society for nothing.

For the movie, it was literally enough to look up to see the truth. In our world the truth is not that easy to see. Sometimes you really do need science to tell you something in the voices of many unconnected researchers (as independent third side arbiters of observable reality). In politics it is even more difficult to say as people dont follow natural laws and you can never reliably see what another side has ultimately in mind.

But if you do subscribe to the train of thought of political realism, supporting the right of Russia to establish the sphere of influence (Ie that of JJ Mearsheimer, who prof Diesen likes), then it must lead that it is always better to be more capable than any possible opponent lest you be at their mercy since realism "argues that states operate in a realm devoid of inherent justice, where ethical norms may not apply"

there are no neutrals in a world organized along political realism doctrine just as there were no neutrals in Dont look up movie for much the same reasons

It is up to the Russians to explain their claims and alleviate the impression of being the comet despite being in the right about the initial causes of the war

I just hope that the outcome will not be as clear cut as in the movie

If you look carefully you will find that "fact checking" as practiced in western media is a product of the RAND Corp's orwellian propaganda ("media integrity") project. RAND Corp is the US military's "think tank".

Most people who critiise the so called fact checkers dont even know that. But they do grasp that what calls itself fact checking is in fact just a clearly targeted censorship filter.

Ivan Sabol's avatar

i agree that having any authoritarian system making the "new truth" would be especially bad...

but what is the solution if it is not an independent fact checking system?

it is naive to think that any single person can reliably factcheck the known world alone better than specialists in their field

while i dont know which fact checkers you refer to, most of the things coming out of Reuters for example is very credible

this underpins the whole issue... people discuss things based on feelings...whithout bothering to provide data or evidence...and this deteriorates the quality of the discussion since you cant really discuss opinions

Yes...but the so-called fact checking in western socities is NOT independent. Its basically NATO (military) and govt-seeded, pretending to be "independent", which is worse.

Here is one example from Norway - the Faktisk.no national " independent fact checking".

What is it actually:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faktisk.no

"Its editor-in-chief was Kristoffer Egeberg until June 2023.[2][3] In 2018 it announced a partnership with Facebook to fact-check content on the platform.[4][5].

Egeberg, editor-in-chief since its inception, announced his resignation with immediate effect in June 2023 to assume a position in the Norwegian secret surveillance and intelligence service PST.[5]....."

https://www.forsvaretsforum.no/forsvarets-forum-medier-pressemelding/stian-eisentrager-forlater-forsvarets-forum/343489

PUBLISERT 09.09.2023

"...Stian Eisenträger forlater Forsvarets forum

Etter tre år i Forsvarets forum er sjefsredaktøren er klar for nye utfordringer som ansvarlig redaktør for Faktisk.no..."

Can any actually regard THAT revolving door of thinly vieled spooks and disinformaiton spreaders as...."independent fact checking"?

No - obviously not. It's disgusied centralised censorship and narrative control.

Expand full comment
Ivan Sabol's avatar

you neglect to mention that Egeberg was snitching or uncovering some dubious moves by the Norway military before that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kristoffer_Egeberg

How likely it is that all of that was a government long con?

possible but unlikely.... it is the conspiracy theory and tinfol hat region of thought where everything is a plot from lizard people...

beyond raising concerns about the credibility of Faktisk.no to random people on the internet, did you by any chance send an inquiry to their "International Fact-Checking Network" so they could police themselves?

https://www.poynter.org/ifcn/

since they are USA based...it is unlikely they answer to the "Norwegian Police Security Service " unless lizard people of course...

and beyond being angry at the world and rejecting proposed solutions.... do you have some better course of action beyond hiding in a bunker and not trusting anyone?

Also ... you could use the Gemini AI (seems to be freely available) https://gemini.google.com/

and put in the prompt as i have "how credible is the fact checking website Faktisk.no. Are there significant ties to fabricated or propaganda content? "

im curious as to whether neutral tool might change your mind

I dont "neglect" anything - I pinpointed the source of coordinated lies. The man has been paid by the military. So we know where his bread is buttered. And what he has been sent to do.

This is how manufacturing consent works in the NATO world. They send out agents to dictate what is said, or not said. And pretend it is "independent" when in fact it is NATO-state controlled media.

That is what Faktisk.no and the like are: state propaganda censors.

You only have to look at the orgie of lies, and misdirection in the Norwegian media is, to understand exactly what Faktisk.no is. A pack of lies. Lies like claims that Israel's genocidal war on Palestinians magically began on "October 7th". Lies like claims that the civil war in Ukraine magically began when Russian troops stepped in two years ago. Lies like clains that the Zelensky regime is a bulwark of democracy, when it fact it's stuffed with neonazis and has been systematically eradicating opposition and imposing fascist laws and oppressing its own people, not to mention killing them.

No one should ever trust proven liars and those who knowingly hide the truth. These kind of "fact checkers" that let such lies go on, are lie coordination machines.

And they are destroying society. See slides 34 and 44:

https://www.edelman.com/sites/g/files/aatuss191/files/2025-01/2025%20Edelman%20Trust%20Barometer%20Global%20Report_01.23.25.pdf

That's what happens when lies are fed to people.

We dont need an "alternative" to slyly imposed NATO lie coordinators.

Worse yet you propose a black box "AI" by a company that is proven to NOT care about truth, trust or people. Just money. Oh wow great solution:

https://www.edelman.com/sites/g/files/aatuss191/files/2025-01/2025%20Edelman%20Trust%20Barometer%20Global%20Report_01.23.25.pdf

We need them gone. They are corroding democracy and society.

This is a superbly written, if mighty scary illustration of the truly Orwellian dark times we live in.

Coming from the UK, Norway's famous neutrality wasn't just long inspiring it was also highly useful to Western powers when it came to it being viewed universally as a good actor in thorny negotiations involving Israel/Palestine for example.

Thanks to Ukraine, all that hard won trust has been thrown out the window and it is proving to be just as unprincipled, corrupt, bellicose and self-serving as the majority of its western counterparts.

You're a courageous analyst Glenn. Trying to inform Western publics of anything that isn't endorsed by the major news organisations is a worthy but thankless task. We (local activists) really pulled out all the stops to campaign against the Iraq invasion and received abuse from every quarter: even my own friends & father accused me of spreading misinformation because we challenged the weapons claims and pointed to the PNAC and other indicators that Iraq was a strategic target long before 9.11 (although its very hard to find someone who was in favour of the war now). Apparently the ability of the mind to reason is reduced by the emotions (which are designed to focus you for action); simplistic emotional branding does indeed seem to destroy peoples' ability to think and it seems the powers that be have known this for a long time. If its any compensation there are lots of us out here who really appreciate your well thought through pieces, your impressive command of the issues and the excellent guests you have on your show.

This entire Ukraine debacle seems to be an episode of mass psychosis in all of Scandinavia, not just Norway.

They all falling over themselves to "help" Ukrainians die under bombs.....with NO insight that after the war is over, nuclear-armed Russia and USA will be fine and its the rich Scandinavian countries that will be forced to fork out MORE money to pay for the reconstruction of Ukraine...while the USA carts off the minerals from it.

So the Norwegians and the others are literally bombing their own wallets when they send money and missiles to Ukraine.

Even worse yet, they are lining up to be the new "Ukraine": nations on the Russian border openly hostile to it and pointing weapons at it. Well that didnt end well for Ukraine: they have lost an entire generation of men and for their troubles the US took all their mineral wealth. Which would happen to Sweden, Norway and Finland too if they are silly enough to do the same,

Madness.

Prof. Diesen has also been instrumental in providing a platform for Prof. Ove Tunander to share his analysis how Sweden in particular was propagandized to the point that neutrality no longer became tolerable to the vast majority of the population there. Folk i Norge ser ut til å forsvare en kjær livsløgn, så ordskiftet er helt umulig å trenge igjennom- og har vært det siden korona spøkelset gjorde det tydelig at vår skjøre tillit til medier og statsapparat er feilplassert. The issues that you outline in your essay about Norwegian society resounds across a number of Western European countries. Isn't it ironic that you are upholding a way of debating ideas that used to be the norm until fairly recently? Many people today are unable to appreciate that your argument about being allowed to make your argument is also to their advantage. We don't need to agree on every single issue (for example Gaza) to appreciate the superior value of a rational fact-based discussion instead of a display of propaganda fuelled moral grandstanding based on 15 second videos on social media or TV. I am afraid to think about what it will take to learn that lesson again. Keep fighting, you will be vindicated in time.

👍Norwegian governments and mainstream media are leading the country to fight against the superpower Russia on the battlefield some day in the future.

We have already seen the Ukrainian 🇺🇦 flag along side the Norwegian 🇳🇴 flag on 17th of May, the Norwegian Independence Day.

Ironically this might tell us that Norway potentially end up with the same horrible destiny like Ukraine.

The losses on the battlefield have now reached approximately 1.5 million dead Ukrainian soldiers and 10-20 to 1 in favour of Russia means 100.000-150.000 Russians are now killed during the war.

These are numbers the Norwegian government and media are hiding from the population.
