This story perfectly illustrates what happens when societies abandon critical thinking for tribal conformity. What's particularly striking is Diesen's observation that he's been discussing these issues for twenty years - meaning generations have been systematically conditioned to reject certain perspectives outright.

The most chilling aspect isn't the government's response, but how ordinary citizens eagerly participated in tearing down posters, comparing their vandalism to "liberating the country from Hitler." When propaganda runs this deep, facts become irrelevant. People don't process information rationally anymore - they filter everything through their tribal identity.

Diesen's experience shows how modern authoritarianism works: not through jackboots and violence, but through social ostracism, reputational destruction, and the weaponization of moral righteousness. The "fact-checkers" weren't seeking truth - they were enforcing conformity to the approved narrative.

The tragedy is that this kind of indoctrination tears societies apart at their foundation. When we can no longer have rational debates about policy without questioning each other's loyalty or morality, democracy becomes impossible. The only way back is to find shared human values - our common desire for peace, security, and dignity - and work from there toward some semblance of shared truth.

But first, we have to recognize that we are being programmed to see fellow citizens as enemies. That's the real price of propaganda: it doesn't just control what we think, it destroys our capacity to think together.

Professor Diesen, I wish you strength and courage as you weather this storm. History will remember those who dared to speak truth when speaking truth becomes dangerous!
