The best explanation for the bizarre behaviour of Western governments that I have come across so far is from Emmanuel Todd, a prominent socio-anthropologist. In his book “La défaite de l’occident” ( The defeat of the West), he states that Western societies have reached a state of nihilism. He has lots of statistics to back up this assertion. This is the final stage of decomposition of a society. The impulse would then be to destroy anything and everything, with or without reason. This is clearly what we are seeing today.
