When Gaza genocide was condoned by the liberals and the West in general, international law died. There is no shame in violating international norms anyway if done by the West.

Daniel Platt's avatar

It’s been this way for 45 years. Obviously the 1960s activism was vociferous in criticizing US foreign policy. Where is the traditional left today? We used to know how to organize and mobilize.

David Latin's avatar

Too many personal threats perhaps, one glaring deterrent was the assassination of JFK as he pressed 🇮🇱 for transparency and adherence to norms. CIA has become even more rogue, government far more corrupted by lobby groups with $ interests.

Daniel Platt's avatar

Yes. And the assassinations of Malcolm Martin Fred Hampton and Bobby Kennedy. And the formation of the trilateral commission and their report on crisis of democracy in 1975. First the Powell memorandum in 1971 and 8/15/1971 when we went off the gold standard and The Bretton Woods agreements. De industrialization and finance capitalism or neoliberalism or too big to fail. Bail out the mega rich but not the ordinary people. Domestic class warfare in response to the 1960s to regain their governance. Read the report crisis of democracy. It’s available on a pdf if you google it, you can read it in its entirety.

Xi Jinping, Donald and Putin have decided they will rule the world by dividing it into three parts. Donald gets the Americas. Russia gets Europe and Africa. Xi gets Asia. There will be no law. There is no place safe from autocracy now. Wishing you all the beautiful puppies and kittens.

The Family Industrial Complex's avatar

ANd what are USraelis DOING about it?

John Woodford's avatar

Sachs's most important insight comes right at the end: those who think the US is doing what Putin is doing in Ukraine are ignorant, blind or bamboozled. Maybe all three. Ukraine's takeover by the US (Google Victoria Nuland) and subsequent embroilment with Russia is a result of US regime-change machinations that were spun out over many years. The driving "logic" behind both conflicts is the "outreach" methods of a capitalist state desperately in search of profits -- aka imperialism.

It’s also worth noting the unwritten rule that leaders do not attack leaders. One side of this is unfair, another is quite practical. Even after his term expired, Zelensky was not taken or killed.

John Woodford's avatar

Are the CIA and Pentagon and NATO also irrelevant.? I’ll cite a book by a French NGO worker who was in Ukraine monitoring the disappearances (by imprisonment and/or murder) of Ukrainian critics of their country’s being sacrificed as a pawn of NATO expansion: What I Saw in Ukraine 2015-2022 by Benoit Pare. It’s subtitled “Diary of an International Observer”

John Woodford's avatar

Saddam Hussein, M Qaddafi and Thomas Sankara and Patrice Lumumba and Ngo Diem or whatever his name was whom JFK killed will be happy to discuss that unwritten rule with you.

hesseh's avatar

Victoria Nuland is irrelevant charachter in maidan if you have looked into the topic. I recommend to read some books

nobody is going to step up and save us. Look at Gaza, ffs. Nope, if someone or something is going to stop this insanity, it has to come from within the belly of the beast. History shows that the only thing that defeats fascism is an organized, unified, MILITANT LABOR MOVEMENT #WorkingClassUnite and #DestroyTheZionaziOverlords #USRegimeChangeNOW

Richard Mellor's avatar

There has to be a revolt within organised labor and the present class collaborators thrown out. Increased power for the US rogue regime abroad will mean increased assault on organized and unorganised labor at home.

There's a saying. 枪杆子里面出政权八七会议

Frances Lynch's avatar

Yep. "political power grows out of the barrel of a gun,"

"On August 7, 1927, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) held an emergency meeting in Hankou, Hubei Province, known as the August 7th Meeting. This meeting was convened at a critical juncture when the CPC faced a life-or-death situation after the failure of the Great Revolution. The meeting criticized and corrected Chen Duxiu's right-leaning opportunist errors, removed him from his positions within the party, elected a provisional Central Political Bureau, and determined the general principles of land revolution and armed struggle. At the meeting, Mao Zedong put forward the important assertion that "political power grows out of the barrel of a gun," emphasizing that "in the future, we must pay close attention to military affairs, knowing that political power is obtained through the barrel of a gun." This assertion was made during the discussion of military struggle at the meeting and became a valuable lesson learned by the party from the bloody lessons of the failure of the Great Revolution."

Angie's avatar

Yes. It was a hard learned lesson, and it shouldn't be forgotten. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it, and American education is severely lacking in that department.

Sera's avatar

People have been “learning from history” for thousands of years.

People have also been repeating it for thousands of years.

Maybe it’s time for a new approach.

David Latin's avatar

History is hardly being taught in schools these days, as are many other things not being taught, that are vying for space with subjects to do with heaping up piles of $.

$$$ has become the definition of "success" and a good life.

It has come to legitimise many undesirable things unfortunately. Even the corruption of the media and of government!!!

This is the fundamental root of the evil we see.

David Latin's avatar

A Great man, yet in the end his hands were cut off, by the power of money to corrupt and usurp ideals.

All comments saying same thing . Sach will not comdemn the only group no one will say .in media . F Jewish bankers and central banks .comments are all right . So just blame Trump pop pet .

Richard Mellor's avatar

Wow! I've never heard that before.

Daniel Platt's avatar

Spot on Angie. We need a movement that is not controlled by the billionaire class and we need a movement based on class struggle class awareness class consciousness. Not the fake contemporary boutique activism of contemporary liberals. Where are the traditional liberals?

Francis Anscombe's avatar

A great deal of petroleum supply has been unavailable to the market. It is thus economically rational and politically prudent for the US to act as trump chose.

Angie's avatar

No. We don't get to just go steal people's shit because we want it. That's ILLEGAL under US and International Law.

David Latin's avatar

Rule of the Jungle is fine with you!

Even with Nuclear Armageddon an enormous risk?

"The West" isn't going to say anything about Venezuela because, firstly, nobody cares about some little country far away that we've been told repeatedly is run by a communist dictator. But also because the leaders of the west are all in it together - they all do exactly what they want and the media just covers it all up. Zelensky becomes a Churchillian leader of a peaceful democracy invaded by Putin who has been turned into "literally Hitler" crossed with Satan going around randomly invading countries he has no connection with. Commentators who comment unfavourably become Non-People. Nobodies on Twitter/X go to prison for hurty words. Tax-payers money gets poured into the coffers of unelected rulers and their friends. What could the New York Times or The Guardian or the BBC possibly say that wouldn't lead to the floodgates opening?

Carolyn L Zaremba's avatar

Venezuela is not such a small country.

Stuffysays's avatar

I know - I was referencing Neville Chamberlain (I think) who said something about why would anyone get involved about a small country far away (Czechoslovakia) being invaded by a more powerful country (Germany). So I was trying to say that Europe won't do anything about Venezuela.

Kudos to Boss Sachs for jumping on this interview from some nondescript hallway in some nondescript hotel somewhere in this forlorn world. We appreciate you more than we can say, Dr. Sachs.

Sologrammar's avatar

I think I could listen to a 10 hour long lecture given by Sachs and never yawn once.

Harald's avatar

Trump is completely off his marbles, a warmongerer and absolutely no candidate for peace. I am still waiting for Russia and China to issue their plans to counter these US actions, I hope they can deescalate the outlook for WW3 while still force the US to back down

KC Erasmus's avatar

Chump has adopted a "Stop me if you can" policy and attitude, which will sure at some point in the future surely reach a point where somebody does stop him and the US, for good.

Stravaiger's avatar

Why does Sachs call the Venezualean Government "The Regime"?

Kate's avatar

Jeffrey Sachs quotes the American military state.

Angie's avatar

Administration would be a better word, I think

Karl Brainard's avatar

Agreed, although at this point if we look at the wider world, there are possibly more regimes than administrations. U$-style "democracy" seems to be spreading like a virus.

Kathleen McCroskey's avatar

Thank you for immediate commentary on current (criminal) events. Prof. Sachs needs to reframe "regime" - that term, with the prefix "rogue" applies only to the Criminal Empire.

hesseh's avatar

you should be happy. We are moving to the world away from universal rule of law back to the cold war back to the yalta just as Jeffrey Sachs and Glenn has proposed. Russia is very happy

In my humble opinion, this whole thing is a Zionazi imperialist takeover. They've bribed and blackmailed Europe into submission. They've accomplished the complete takeover of the US congress, the courts, and the Presidency. Now they want to seize Central and South America. Greenland is next on their list. IT'S ALL ZIONAZI BILLIONAIRE OVERLORD IMPERIALISM. Lying, thieving, murdering innocent civilians, and destabilizing entire geopolitical regions is what the Zionazis do.
