Iran is not a signatory to UNCLOS, nor is the US.

But, traditionally, all countries abide by the basic rules.

There is 12 nautical miles of territorial waters from the low water mark of the coast. Territorial waters are exactly as if it was the coastal nation's land. Then an addition 12 nautical miles are understood as coastal waters that are within safety and defensive region of that nation. It can prohibit what UNCLOS calls non-innocent passage. Those are cargo that threaten the nation or strengthen the adversary, from missiles to crates of gold.

So, by established tradition, Iran and Oman's coastal regions extend 8 miles into the opposite nation. But, their territorial (terrestrial waters) waters overlap by 3 miles.

So, it is hot air talking about this being international waters.

If the Persian gulf was connected to the Oman sea by an artificial canal, it would be easier to understand. Nature has handed Oman and Iran this passage, like gold mines in S. Africa and Congo (don't tell the Belgians!).

And in times of war, nations may control their territorial waters. I wonder why there was no transit issues before Feb. 28?

Iranian leaders had discussed the issue several times during the last four decades but didn't have the defensive equipment to counter any military reaction to such a motion. By luck, they had Khamenei as the leader (the elder), he was a science nerd and a bookworm. He studied US war games published in early 2000s and realized that it was possible to maintain sovereignty with a very modest (59th in the world) military budget. His love of science and technology drove research. Videos of his discussions with scientists and visits to research labs are on youTube, but without a subtitle. Youtube seems to be picky as to what languages are available for auto translation which can get people up to 98% there.

Thank you for the info. As well, he fought in the war with Iraq so knew the evils of U.S. aggression, so they have been preparing for the U.S. return for decades. As well as for the zionist enemy.

At the time of the first negotiations in Pakistan, Iran told their hosts that they still had 15K missiles and 40K drones. Why should the "strength" of Iran be anyone's business - nobody should be attacking Iran!

I'm a "European" being a Brit. I'm not against the Yanks taking their troops home.
