The US/UK did their best to eliminate democracy in Iran, by couping President Mossadegh in the 1950's (because oil), and installing the repressive secular Shah, which led (surprise) to a Revolution. Then the US encouraged Iraq to attack Iran, resulting in 8 years of brutal war. Then there are the punishing economic sanctions ..... Mr Beebe should know better.

I like to propose a different view: America's approach is the Mafia approach of a protection racket. America gave half of Europe to the Soviet Union. 1) I note that Ukraine War is driven by two interest groups in pragmatic alliance: a Far-Right military sect and a corrupt regime headed by Zelinskyy. These two groups are fighting their war for different aims and only united because both depend on logistics, intelligence, and funding by NATO/EU allies, and ultimately, are afloat on petrodollar debt (now threatened by Iran War). Take away the money and the war ends. Knowing this, the war is fought tactically, not strategically, simple to keep the money flowing. They are fighting in order to go on fighting - this is the only aim in view.
2) In response to another conversation, between Prof. Diesen and Prof. Petro, I asked whether there was any Leftwing opposition to Zelenskyy/Far-Right war in Ukraine, a group that might seek peace or fight the warmongers in a Ukrainian civil war (with or without Russian participation) until peace could be sought. To answer my own question, I suspect there are no Leftist in Ukraine, no organised opposition to war. I suspect the Left has been purged - killed or in exile. And probably the hit list was drawn up with the help of intelligence supplied by CIA, MI6, and European equivalents.
3) Earlier, I listened to a comment by Owen Jones (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZD7SKX8Tt_8) discussing the US classification of 'Antifa' as a 'terrorist organisation'. I recommend listening. Jones makes a strong case for believing Trump regime is seeking to criminalise any opposition to Trumpism (whatever that is other than the random impulses of a depraved man). We in Britain already see the nominally Left-of-Centre Labour Party carrying out its own criminalisation of democratic opposition or legitimate protest against illegal policy. EU sanctions against critics of EU or Ukraine War is also well-documented. Clearly, there is a systematic shift Right on-going.
4) I suspect that the true strategic purpose of the Ukrainian War is nothing to do with Ukraine or Russia per se but more to do with using this war as an excuse to undermine democracy in NATO/EU/allied states, to join in international class war, united elites against the 99% and especially against organised opposition from the Left.
5) If we take Eisenhower's advice and broaden our lens for viewing the Ukraine War, we must see 'cui bono' and the only beneficiaries I can identify are the authoritarian Right. The allies strategy is to use war to end democracy, establishing the current political elite in unassailable dominance over a supine population.
6) When Russia seeks peace, talks about mutual security, talks about better fences making better neighbours, the allies must be laughing until their sides split because Russia has so completely missed the reality i.e. that the strategy of this war is not to forment conflict between elites over control of territory but to wage a class war which is using Ukraine as a proxy and distraction whilst advancing profound political changes in the western states rapidly becoming former democracies. Sure, if by some chance the Ukraine War brings benefits on the battlefield, ifbthey manage to conquer Russia, turn it into a cluster of small colonial states, the allies would accept the wind-fall. But fundamentally, it does not matter whether Ukraine or Russia wins. It only matters that the conflict last long enough, and looks threatening enough, that the authoritarians can complete their coup against their own people, keeping them distracted and bamboozled so they cannot defend their own rights but give them away 'for the sake of supporting plucky little Ukraine in its fight against big bully Russia'.
7) Of course, what would completely de-rail these plans would be if Russia were indeed to act as the allies pretend they fear it will i.e. if Russia were to not just occupy Donbas but all of Ukraine, or maybe much of the former USSR, or maybe press on to the Atlantic coast and seize everything called 'Europe'. The elite would fight back by conscripting everyone they could mobilise: fighting to the last (of the working class) left standing. My question is whether the working class of Europe would be so utterly stupid. And if wiser, what they will do now to prevent such a future ever being remotely possible.
Too cynical? Can one be too cynical about Trump? About NATO/EU as it has become or maybe always was? 'Cui bono' - whom does this war benefit? Explain that, and we understand why it is continuing despite every good reason for it to stop. Class war never stops. It is like rust, it never sleeps. Sadly, the elite are experts at it but the working class are utterly alienated from their own interests - they will wake up eventually but probably too late. I am old, I am glad I will not live to see the worst. If I try to end on an optimistic note then let's say I hope both the working class and Russians see through the not very clever stratagems of the Trumpian elite/Epstein elite and tell them to shove it.
