NATO's proxy war in Ukraine is morphing into a direct EU-Russia war. And the war hawks in Brussels are further escalating by attacking civilians in the Donbas and Russia proper. The doves in the Kremlin are running out of options to keep their own hawks under wraps. As things stand now, an all-out EU-Russia war is not only a possible, but by now a likely scenario. But to what end?

Interesting. You (Prof. Diesen) are correct about "Incrementalism" in Conflict Escalation. Another dimension in Conflict Escalation in addition to "Incrementalism" is the lack of Listening to your Competitor. Arrogant and overly self-assertive Leaders do not (want to) hear what they are told clearly by the Leaders of the Other side.
Add to this the Israeli "Style" self-assertiveness of Killing the Negotiators or the Leaders of Competing parties.
As the #1 Lesson from the Life of Robert McNamara was "Empathize with your Enemy", this principle seems to be vanishing from the Western Cultural Space.
