The USSR was our ally against evil, until Germany was defeated and then the USSR was the evil enemy.
The mujahideen (Al Qaeda) were our allies against the evil USSR, until the USSR was no more and then Al Qaeda was the evil enemy.
A cynical man might see a pattern emerging, and begin to suspect that these moral categories are quite malleable as a function of political utility rather than moral integrity.
